Many veterans and reservists enrolled in an approved academic program at Penn State are eligible to receive education benefits (i.e., financial assistance) through the Veterans Administration.

Please review the information provided below about the education benefits options available to members of the armed services. A schedule of payment rates is available through the Department of Veterans Affairs.

At-a-Glance Information For Veterans and Dependents

Chapter 30: Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty
The MGIB-AD program provides up to thirty-six months of education benefits to eligible veterans.

Tuition Assistance Top-Up (TATU)
TATU is an amendment to the Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty education program that permits VA to pay a Tuition Assistance Top-up benefit.

Chapter 33: Post 911 GI Bill
The Post-9/11 GI Bill provides financial support for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 11, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. You must have received an honorable discharge to be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill.

Chapter 1606: Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve
The MGIB-SR program is available to members of the Selected Reserve, which includes the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, as well as the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. You may be entitled to receive up to thirty-six months of education benefits.

Chapter 31: Vocational Rehabilitation
Vocational Rehabilitation is a program designed to help veterans with service-connected disabilities become suitably employed, maintain employment, or achieve independence in daily living.

Chapter 35: Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program
DEA provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of certain veterans. The program offers up to forty-five months of education benefits.

Chapter 1607: Reserve Educational Assistance Program
REAP is a new Department of Defense education benefit program designed to provide educational assistance to members of the Reserve components called or ordered to active duty in response to a war or national emergency (contingency operation) as declared by the President or Congress.

Education Benefits Procedures and Responsibilities of the Veteran, Reservist, Dependent, or Spouse

For New Students

  1. Contact/visit the Veterans office at the campus you will be attending.
  2. Pay your acceptance fee to the University.
  3. Process your bill.
  4. Be sure your basic training credits and credits from any other school are evaluated by the university. Stop in the Admissions office for assistance.

For Returning Students

  1. Process your bill each semester.
  2. Meet with your academic adviser before scheduling your classes.
  3. Notify the University and the VA of any change in address or phone number.
  4. Notify the Veterans Coordinator of any change to enrollment status, including change of major, dropping or adding of courses, attending full- versus part-time, etc. If called to active duty, follow Penn State’s Military Withdrawal process.
  5. Notify the Student Affairs office (717-771-4045) of any major change in income.
