When You Wish Upon a Star...Disney Magic Delights York Alumni
Penn State York went on an Epcot theme park adventure in March. With the help of some Disney magic, alumni in Florida were treated to Penn State Berkey Creamery ice cream and waterfront seats for fireworks. Bruce Broadbent, retired Penn State York faculty member, joined Di Hershey director of development, as the Penn State York representative to host our alums for this Fire and Ice event.
John Norwig Thanks Penn State York
John Norwig, ‘79, ‘84, head athletic trainer for the Pittsburgh Steelers, returned to campus on March 17 to be the keynote speaker for the Student’s Career Networking Lunch and for the Alumni in the Spotlight event. In the evening at the Pullo family Performing Arts Center (The Pullo Center) on campus. Norwig spoke about the education and career path that took him from Hanover to Penn State York to University Park and finally to Pittsburgh. Norwig recognized his high school coach and his Penn State York basketball coach in the audience and acknowledged that they had a significant impact on his life and thanked them for their guidance and support. His Super Bowl ring was just one noticeable element of success . . . his love for the sport and the athletes he works with came shining through with his comments, answers to everyone’s questions, and his smile.
The career networking luncheon provided ten career opportunities for students to explore. In addition to the keynote speaker, six of the ten hosts were Penn State alumni. Some came from as far as Virginia to share their stories about their path to success and provide students with advice. We want to thank our alumni for staying connected: Deborah Koller ’76, Edward Jones Investments; W. Alan Snook ’86, Maximum Business Consulting; William McQuade ’91, ’92, Johnson Controls; Jessica Christensen ’04, Cookie Lee Jewelry; Gregory Richart ’06, BD Diagnostics; and Molly Dallmeyer ’90, ’95 Secondary Education. If you would like to stay connected by participating in a future networking event, contact the Development office at 717-718-6781 or Iona@psu.edu and let us know you are interested in being a table host.
Reuniting Veteran Alums
The 2009 Veterans Reunion on May 3 brought veteran alumni from as far back as 1968 and as far away as Oklahoma back to campus. With a call for help from Jeff Wigbels ‘76, the Development office assisted members of the 1974 Chi Gamma Iota fraternity, fondly referred to as XGI, to reconnect with each other in January and a spring reunion idea was born. Mike Brosey ’77 hosted the event. Even though the rain washed out the York Revolution baseball game for the afternoon entertainment, breakfast with current veteran students, a backstage and catwalk tour of The Pullo Center tour, and a campus tour by Lion Ambassadors allowed the group to experience both the old and the new at Penn State York.
Di Hershey, director of development, is looking to keep taking Penn State York on the road. This past academic year also included trips and events in Boston and Washington, D.C. She will continue to find ways for you to stay connected. Don’t hesitate to contact her if you want Penn State York to come to you.
